Basma was the President of the (University Network for Excellence in Nuclear Engineering) from Sept 2009 to September 2016. Basma started her career in 1975 as a process and safety system design engineer at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd ( AECL). She subsequently held many senior technical positions in CANDU design and development, within AECL and CANDU Owners Group.Prior to her retirement in 2009 she was AECL`s Chief Engineer for 11 years. Basma has a B. Sc. From the University of Cairo, a M.A. Sc. in Chemical Engineering (University of Waterloo) and an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
She has received various professional awards including:
- Global Wisdom Award from “Key Women in Energy” in 2004
- The G.L. Brooks Engineering Award from AECL in 2005
During her 34 year career she represented Canada in many International Nuclear Advisory Groups and HWR Working Groups at the IAEA. She has numerous technical publications on CANDU technology design, and related topics.
